Entrepreneurship for All
The mission of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs includes fostering and encouraging women and socially or economically disadvantaged persons to participate in innovation and entrepreneurship. Applicants can self-identify during the application process.
Women-owned Small Business
- The firm must be at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more women and be primarily managed by one or more women.
- The firm must have no more than 500 employees, including affiliates.
- The company must be owned by U.S. citizens.
Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Small Business

State Recipient States of the NIH Institutional Development Award (IDeA)
The IDeA program builds research capacities in states that historically have had low levels of NIH funding by supporting basic, clinical, and translational research; faculty development; and infrastructure improvements. See below for the full list of IDeA states.
